5 Photography Mistakes New Moms Make (and How to Fix Them Fast)

Let’s dive in an uncover the top 5 photography mistakes beginners make!

Remember when you first picked up your camera and thought, “THIS IS SO EXCITING!” followed immediately by, “Wait… what do I do now?”

Yep. Same.

Over a decade ago, when I was just starting out, I made all of the photography mistakes in the book. The good news? You don’t have to. In this post, I’m breaking down five of the most common beginner mistakes I see — plus what to do instead so you can start capturing beautiful, meaningful photos today.

1. Falling Into the Gear Trap

It’s easy to believe that a “better” camera or a fancy new lens will make you a better photographer. But trust me — the best camera is the one you already have.

Instead of spending hours researching upgrades, spend that time learning how to get the most out of the gear you already own. Understanding your settings, light, and composition is what truly elevates your photos.

📸 Pro tip: Invest in a solid beginner-friendly photography course instead of more gear. It’ll save you time, money, and frustration.

2. Not Moving Your Feet

If you’re using a DSLR or phone camera, you might be relying on the zoom instead of actually moving around your subject. But here’s the secret: changing your perspective can change everything.

The closer you get to your subject — especially if you’re photographing your kids — the more connection and emotion you’ll capture. Move your body. Get down on their level. Try a new angle.

3. Moving Too Fast

I know — I just told you to move. But here’s the flip side: don’t rush!

Thanks to digital photography, we’ve gotten used to clicking a hundred frames a minute and hoping one turns out okay. That “spray and pray” method might get lucky shots, but it won’t help you grow and it WILL leave you a thousand images to go through and edit.

What to do instead? Slow down and look. Notice the light. Pay attention to your background. Adjust your settings with intention. It’s one of the most powerful habits you can build and what sets professional photographers apart from novices.

4. Ignoring the Light

If photography is painting with light, you’ve got to learn to see the actual light.

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is not paying attention to highlights and shadows. Light shapes the mood, sharpness, and clarity of your photo. Learn to read it, and you’ll start to understand why a picture “just works.”

Is the light soft or harsh? Are there bright spots on faces or deep shadows you didn’t notice? Simply changing your position or asking your child to move a few inches can drastically improve your photo.

5. Sticking to Auto Mode

Look, no judgment here — auto mode has its place. But if you’re always relying on it, you’re giving up a lot of creative control.

Your camera is smart, but it can’t read your mind. In auto mode, it makes educated guesses based on what it’s light meter sees — often leading to overexposed skies or blurry kids mid-twirl.

By learning to shoot in manual mode, you take charge of your settings and your story. You tell the camera what’s most important, not the other way around.
