If you’ve ever scrolled through your camera roll and sighed at dozens of blurry, duplicate, dull, or just “meh” images — you’re not alone. If you’ve been wondering how to take better phone photos, you made it!
Your phone is capable of capturing beautiful, meaningful moments with your kids — you just need a few simple tips to start getting the results you’re dreaming of.
Whether you’re hoping for a cleaner Instagram feed, sharper everyday photos, or just a little more confidence using your phone camera, these phone photography tips for moms will help you upgrade your shots instantly.
Clean your lens (seriously!)
Before anything else, grab a microfiber cloth (or the edge of your shirt in a pinch) and wipe your camera lens. Gunk from fingerprints, sunscreen, or sticky toddler hands is one of the top culprits behind blurry or hazy photos. You would be amazed (and probably slightly terrified) of how dirty our phones get on a daily basis. Make it a habit to quickly wipe your lens off anytime. you are about to photograph!
Turn on the grid
Head to your phone’s camera settings and enable the grid overlay. This helps you line up subjects and keep your photos straight. For bonus points, place your subject at one of the grid intersections to apply the rule of thirds, which makes your image more balanced and interesting.

Slow down and be intentional
The best advice I can give you? Don’t rush the photograph.
Take a second to breathe. Look at the background, the light, and your subject before tapping the shutter. Slowing down allows you to be more thoughtful and creative with your photos.
Find and look at the light
Good lighting makes all the difference. After all, photographs are only made of light! Try to use natural light whenever possible. Window light and open shade outdoors are your best friends.
Avoid dark, yellow-lit corners of your home — in low light, your phone boosts ISO, leading to grainy, low-quality images (you know the ones that look like poo?). Identify your light source when photographing and then start to look at the highlights and shadows.
Keep it simple
A cluttered background can distract from the moment you’re trying to capture. Instead, look for clean and simple scenes. This helps your subject stand out and instantly makes your photo feel more polished and professional.
Don’t zoom, move!
Pinching to zoom can reduce your image quality. Instead, physically move closer to your subject for clearer, sharper results — especially in low light or when photographing kids.
Set your focus
ap on your subject on the screen to tell your camera exactly where to focus. This is especially helpful when photographing kids, who love to run around just out of frame 😅.
Adjust the exposure manually when needed
After tapping to focus, look for the sun icon (iPhone) or slider bar (Android). This lets you brighten or darken your image manually before you even take the shot.
Use it to avoid overly dark or blown-out photos — it’s like mini-editing on the spot!
Use live photo
Live photos capture a second and a half before and after you press the shutter. You can choose the best moment afterward as your “key photo” — perfect for catching mid-blink or toddler wiggle moments.
